Prof. George Coukos Elected Member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine

Congratulations to Prof. George Coukos, Director of the Department of Oncology at UNIL-CHUV, Director of the Lausanne Branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Full Professor at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine at the University of Lausanne, and AGORA member, on his election to the prestigious U.S. National Academy of Medicine (NAM). Prof. Coukos’s election recognizes his ongoing commitment to advancing scientific and medical research.

The NAM honored Prof. Coukos for his pioneering research establishing a critical link between T-cell infiltration and positive prognosis in ovarian cancer—an observation later extended to all human cancers. He also identified that tumor vasculature acts as a barrier to immunotherapy, demonstrating that normalizing tumor blood vessels with angiogenesis inhibitors enhances T-cell infiltration. This breakthrough laid the foundation for modern immunotherapy, inspiring therapeutic strategies that combine angiogenesis inhibitors with immune checkpoint blockade, yielding significant benefits across numerous solid tumors and revolutionizing cancer treatment.
